Lesbian Travel Destinations

We get a lot of enquiries and bookings from the Lesbian community here at Gayaway2 Travel and have decided for our special Belfast Pride edition to look at some ideas for where Lesbians can go on holiday to get away from it all!

Sadly, very few resorts around the world are exclusively for women or where women and their friends are particularly welcome. However, there are a few lesbian only places to stay, lesbian owned places to stay and woman only places that you can choose from.

Here are our top 5 lesbian holiday ideas:

1. Lesbos – of course!

Lesbos is the island from where the word “lesbian” is originally derived, due to it being the birthplace of the poet Sappho who wrote many a powerful poem about the love between women.

In 2008, some residents of Lesbos tried to get a court order to stop lesbians in Greece from calling themselves lesbians. Do not worry. They did not succeed, and Lesbos continues to be a very popular island for lesbian travellers, particularly the village of Eressos where Sappho was born and particularly in September each year when the women’s festival is on.

For lesbians, gay or solo woman travellers, the resort of Skala Eressos offers something that is almost impossible to find elsewhere in Greece, the opportunity to truly relax and to be you. The beach resort of Skala Erresos is a tranquil women’s haven. Accommodation is basic and it is not a huge party place but there are some lovely places to eat and you can openly kiss and cuddle without feeling at all self-conscious.

Enjoy the day’s catch in any one of the excellent traditional local restaurants, or take your pick of cuisine from one of the alternative cafés and bars on the boardwalk. Get your groove on at a club night or beach party, or catch up on new movie releases under the stars at the beautiful open-air cinema, which also hosts the cutting edge LGBT film festival in September.

If you love your meditation and yoga, there’s a centre dedicated to just that. The whole island is a lush, green paradise offering thermal spas, archaeological remains and some of the most varied bird life in Europe. Water sports, boat trips, excursions and mountain biking are all available too.
Women’s Festivals
If you have not been to Lesbos you must experience this beautiful island and further down we will tell you why. However, if you come during June or September you will enjoy the dedicated women’s festivals, with female artists, musicians, dancers and DJs from all over the world descending on the island.

June 15th – 29th 2013
Alpha Camp returns with beach parties and top international DJ’s, fashion shows, speed dating, dance lessons and lots more www.alpha-camp.com

September 7th – 21st 2013
The 12th International Eressos Women’s Festival, with live music and performances, alternative fashion show, open air film screenings, Dance, Sport, Art Exhibitions and of course the parties, club nights and DJ sets plus a lot more. www.womensfestival.eu/

Getting there from Ireland does mean a few flights, but frequent direct charter flights operate from London and Manchester during summer season. For more details and prices then contact us.
2. Gran Canaria

Lesbian Travel - The Gay Say

Babes and beaches are within your reaches.

An enjoyable, gay-male orientated gay scene is to be found at Yumbo Commercial Centre- but Gran Canaria also offers year round sunshine and beautiful volcanic walks if you feel so inclined.

Something different is a rambling holiday or LGBT-friendly walking holiday where it is perfectly acceptable to bunk off and sunbathe for the day if you do not fancy a ramble.

Jackie’s Guest House. If you fancy a more homely stay in Gran Canaria then, Jackie and Carol’s guest house if ideal for you. Exclusively adult’s only, nothing is too much for these two to help your enjoy your stay.

Quietly located, their guesthouse is in a residential area of Maspalomas yet is close to everything you will need for a super holiday.

Themed Blue and Green rooms with deluxe rooms and roof top terrace to soak up those sunrays!

3. Andalucia in Spain

Andalucia occupies an enviable position – Sandwiched between the Mediterranean to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, with the peaks of the Sierra Morena shielding it to the north, this is one of the brightest and warmest places in Europe. The Atlantic coast is all sun and sand, so for beach holidays a visit to Malaga (home of Picasso), Cadiz or Almeria is a great idea.

There are many fine examples of architecture in Andalucia dating back to the Moorish occupancy. The Alhambra in Granada dates back to the 14th century, the Real Alcazar in Seville to the 12th, and the Great Mosque of Cordoba to the 7th! Incredible to think that not only are these buildings still standing today, but in such good condition.
City breaks are easy if you hire a car through Diva Destinations.

Old traditions continue to thrive here. Local tapas specialities including seafood and stewed meat come with your drinks in many bars, while flamenco exhibitions, and more controversial bull-fighting, can be found in many cities such as Seville and Ronda. Orange trees line the streets of Seville, their bitter fruit commonly used to make marmalade for export.

Half of the Andalucian territory is forested, much of it protected, so if you’re looking for a mountain-biking or hiking holiday there’s abundant trails to follow. The area is extraordinarily bio-diverse, with flamingos, birds of prey, wolves and boar roaming the woods. The skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountain range is highly rated, and golf holidays around the Costa del Sol area are also extremely popular.
Where to stay?

Bambú, Andalucia, Spain – If you are looking to get away from it all then Bambu is ideal place! For a fabulous holiday in southern Spain in an exclusively lesbian environment, look no further than Bambú.

Owners Susanne and Catherine have created an informal, relaxing, fun and sociable environment, where a great deal of laughter and conversation is enjoyed and new friendships formed – often with women from all over the world.

Bambú is open throughout the year. Sun worshippers favour the midsummer months of July to September, when there is very definitely a party atmosphere at Bambú.

For those who still like it warm and sunny … but just not quite so … April, May, June, October and November are the months better suited to sightseeing, hiking and generally exploring this beautiful corner of Spain.
There are several themed holidays throughout the year at Bambú. Every month there is a holiday for women travelling alone. And in Spring and Autumn, hiking, sightseeing, scuba diving, fitness and creative writing holidays feature in the Bambú calendar.

For a unique exclusively lesbian holiday experience under the Spanish sun, why not try Bambú?

4. Sitges

Whether you have you been to Sitges before, or coming here for the first time, Sitges really is a great place to visit all year around. We covered Sitges in issue 2 so can see a full guide in this in archive section of the website.

Sophisticated, chic and cool and with more than 300 sunny days per year, Sitges has been described as “The Jewel in The Mediterranean Crown”, a “Mediterranean Paradise”. It is beautifully nestled between the sparkling blue of the Mediterranean Sea and the impressive backdrop of The Garraf Mountains.
For Lesbian travellers then B My Guest B&B is located in a beautiful 3-storey house located just moments from the sea front and town centre. The B&B is lesbian owned and run, and very popular amongst lesbian travellers. The guest suite is on the top floor and has its own private sun terrace, which faces the sea, from where you can soak up the sun and listen to the sound of the waves.
